Like many children in London, and other cities around the country, the pupils from Waltham Forest were evacuated, for their safety, during the Second World war; they were taken to Rutland (now an area of  Leicestershire) and most had a very happy time living with the families there.

The Maynard Road Evacuees

In 2009 one of the Maynard Road pupils who had been evacuated to Langham got in touch with the school to tell his story.  His name was Gary Godfrey. He visited each class and on a return visit to the school he brought some of the other evacuees; the children served afternoon tea and entertained the visitors with songs from the second world war and dancing.
